3 Reasons to Run Away from Queenstown’s Beauty

Queenstown's natural beauty is exquisite. Crisp mountain air, world class snowfields, and glacial lakes - what more could you ask for?

Have you stumbled into heaven on earth? Of course you have! So why would you ever leave?? (Many don’t).

Okay, let’s assume you DO want to go exploring further afield, then another string to add to Queenstown’s bow is her proximity to at least three excellent New Zealand destinations:

Run away to GLENORCHY – Glenorchy is a 45 minute drive from Queenstown. The tiny settlement contains an area called “Paradise” and it has become a favourite location for film scouts. Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Top of the Lake, Narnia, Wolverine and even a Taylor Swift video has been shot up there – because the landscape is jaw dropping, and amongst the best New Zealand has to offer. Pristine, untouched and protected – with glistening lakes, looming mountains, and massive working farms full of sheep, cattle and horses.

Run away to ARROWTOWN – Just 20 minutes from Queenstown. The drive to Arrowtown takes you past the much photographed Lake Hayes. You'll feel like you stepped onto the set of a western as you enter this gorgeous gold-rush town full of historic buildings and relics from the 1860’s gold boom. The Otago Rail Trail cycle track passes along the Arrow River and there are also some great 4WD tracks to the ruins of Macetown (another gold settlement). In Arrowtown itself you can walk amongst the restored huts of the early Chinese settlers who were lured to New Zealand with the promise of making their fortune, and find out what became of them.

Run away to MILFORD SOUND – An epic, scenic and unique four hour drive/bus from Queenstown or you can book a flight from Queenstown to get incredible views of Mitre Peak, Mt Earnslaw and the Greenstone Valley. Milford Sound is a mystical place that must be experienced at least once in your lifetime. It is a living, breathing giant with waterfalls, towering glaciers, native bush and Maori history. It is so lush you will almost expect unicorns to appear from somewhere, but instead you’ll need to keep your eyes on the Kea parrots that like to chew the rubber fittings off your car doors!
