3 Tips to Ski & Board NZ - for Beginners

For beginner skiers and snowboarders, ski and snowboard holidays can be hard to organise. Use this guide for the top 3 tips to help you have the best time

New Zealand offers many different ski areas, all with their own advantages. If you are not very experienced in skiing or boarding it can be a daunting task to plan a trip. Add in extra variables like young kids, an international holiday and a busy life which doesnt leave much time for planning, and you have a difficult task on your hands. Here are 5 tips to help you put together a fantastic ski or snowboard holiday;

1. Plan Well in Advance, and

Planning well in advance doesn't have to mean a year before, but if you are planning to travel in busy periods such as school holidays, it is good to make your enquiries and book at least 6 months in advance. If you are coming from Australia, flights will be required and if you can book early and get a good deal, it free's up more cash to spend on checked baggage (and other things). It also means you have a broader choice of accommodation and can take advantage of any early booking deals.

2. Seek the advice of a professional

There are several specialist Ski Travel agents, such as the Ski Travel Company, who can provide the whole package for you. If you aren't sure where to go, they will be able to provide tailored advice and also often source the best deals that you would not be able to get yourself. These people have been to the destination, and will be able to share their insider knowledge and experience to find the best inclusions for you.

3. Ensure You Check Out More than One Resort

A fantastic thing about NZ is the many different ski areas accessible from the various accommodation hubs. For example, from Queenstown, it is easy to get to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona. From Wanaka, you can be at Cardrona or Treble Cone within 30 minutes. So take advantage of lift tickets that allow access to more than one ski area, and go check out a few. Cardrona is a fantastic resort for beginners and intermediate skiers, and many people who chose to stay in Queenstown are really stoked when they make the effort to get up there. You will also improve more quickly by experiencing different mountains and ski runs.
