Add The Timber Trail to your Bucket List

The Timber Trail is one of the New Zealand Cycle Trails. It's in a lost corner of the North Island, so go there now before the hordes discover it.

The Timber Trail is just under 100kms long and well within the capabilities of anyone who's done a bit of cycling in preparation.  North-East of Taumarunui or about an hour West of Taupo the trail goes regenerating bush in the Pureora Forest.  The first morning is a bit of a grind to zigzag up the slopes of Mt. Pureora but the afternoon is reward as you hurtle back down the other side.

We cycled the Trail over two days (staying at Black Fern Lodge).  Day Two, whilst longer than the first day is a more level trail being either flat or a gentle, gentle rise during the morning and the finale in the afternoon - a 20km no-brakes exhilarating downhill into the carpark just out of Ongarue.

Bush, suspension bridges over canyons, a bit of logging history, expansive scenery - this Trail is supercool and, so long as you are not a complete couch potato, you will sweat but you will be capable.  And you will be rewarded forthe effort.
