The eastern Bay of Plenty coastline is both spectacular and diverse, with sweeping sandy beaches and craggy rocky headlands.
Perhaps the jewel in this coastal crown is Ohiwa harbour, between Whakatane and Opotiki. Ohiwa is a small and sheltered harbour that is dotted with many islands. It is a haven for numerous birds such as godwits, dotterals, oysterctchers and herons.
The silence of kayaking and cycling is superb way to explore this unspoiled coastline. Here are six great ideas, featuring the Motu Trails and KG Kayaks. KG's is owned and operated by Kenny McCracken and is a Motu Trails official partner.
Mix and match as you choose. These ideas can be tailored to suit both your experience itinerary. To know more contact KG Kayaks or email email@example.com
Guided kayak on Ohiwa Harbour. The home of KG Kayaks is Ohiwa Harbour. Kenny has run the business for over 15 years. He knows the harbour's history and features and how to ensure you get the best experience in different tides and weather conditions. His trips are tailored to the level of your experience, so there's fun for all.
Ride Ohiwa harbourside trail. There's quiet road and harbourside trail beside parts of Ohiwa. A good place to start is from the entrance of Onekawa Te Mawhai regional park, where there's a shelter, parking and toilets. This is very close to the superb Ohiwa Beach Holiday Park, where there's camping and cabins, and you're a few steps from fishing, beach and bush trails.
Kayak under moonlight. KG Kayaks offer moonlight guided paddle tours. These are a remarkable experience, seeing the beauty of Ohiwa at night.
Ride the Dunes Trail. The perfect paddle-pedal combo is to kayak Ohiwa Harbour then ride the easy Dunes Trail, which is part of the Motu Trails.
SUP the Otara river. Motu Trails Limited is based right near the start of the Dunes Trail. As well as offering a wide range of hire bikes, they have SUP boards, for paddling in the Otara river.
Sail then paddle by Moutohora island. KG Kayaks and ProSail yacht charters offer half-day trips for groups of six or more. You sail out near to the island on an ocean-going catamaran. Kenny unloads the stable sit-on kayaks, and groups enjoy a guided paddle, before returning to the mainland by sail power.
