Visit the Museum of Working Class History for an interesting slice of New Zealand history.
Find a local to take you gold panning, and walk all (or just part) of the 18km Creosus Track.
And there is always Arnie's warm fire to go back to. The Workingmens Club is cosy and open from Thursday to Sunday.
The Blackball Library is open 6pm-7pm Thursday nights; come and have a drink with the noisy librarians.
Don't just drive through, get out of the car and have a look around.
