With the second highest number of courses per capita in the world, golfers don’t have to travel far to tee off in New Zealand. The region of Christchurch and Canterbury is no exception with more than 40 courses ranging from Championship par 72 courses to quaint country greens with honesty boxes for payment. Holidaymakers could literally spend every day playing a different course.
The golf addict won’t have to wait long after touchdown in Christchurch to get their first fix with two premium courses - Russley and Clearwater, located within a 3 – 7 minute drive respectively from Christchurch International Airport
Tip 1: Keep the golf gear handy, golf enthusiasts won’t want to miss teeing off on these holes.
Golf fanatics will instantly fall in love with the pristine greens and breathtaking mountain views from Clearwater. It’s no wonder this course is home to the New Zealand Women’s Golf Open. Long flat fairways, six tee positions and hazards a plenty will challenge even the most experienced golfer. Hiring an electric golf cart is a must, especially if time is paramount! As with all high-end courses appropriate golf attire is required, there’s no place for boardies and jandals on this course! After your round, enjoy a ‘cold one’ from the members lounge while watching other golfers seal their fate with views overlooking the 18th green.
Tip 2: Bring lots of extra balls and be prepared to lose a few, as there’s an abundance of water hazards at Clearwater to test your skill and patience.
Terrace Downs is another ‘must try’ course in the Canterbury region and is located within an hour’s drive from Christchurch International Airport. Nestled near the base of the Southern Alps this is not only a premium golf destination but also the perfect alpine retreat. Like Clearwater the course offers a par 72, 18 hole championship course. The fairways and greens are immaculate and the hilly terrain and tree-lined fairways make this a challenging course for all abilities.
Tip 3: Keep your eye on the ball! The views are so spectacular especially from the ‘signature 16th’ that it can be hard to concentrate on the game itself. Definitely a course to play if you want to soak up the ‘big’ scenery that New Zealand is renowned for. Breathtaking views of the icy blue waters of the Rakaia with mountainous backdrop will keep you pinching yourself!
Tip 4: Keep the sand wedge handy, with 70 bunkers you may need it!
Pegasus Golf and Sport Club
Pegasus is the newest of the three par 72 Championship courses in Canterbury. Located roughly 30 minutes from Christchurch International Airport this course offers a ‘parkland style course’ featuring lakes and wetlands. Four tee positions add a different dimension to every hole. A superb putting green and driving range flank the course, so there should be no excuses for not getting a hole in one!
Tip 5: Pack the swimsuit! There is nothing like a refreshing dip at Pegasus Bay Beach to cool off after completing 18 holes!
