Whether you choose to explore Milford Sound by road, foot or air, you will be treated to some of the most spectacular alpine scenery in the world. There are a number of great walks that depart from this region, including the ever-popular Milford Track. For a more laidback experience, enjoy Milford Sound's navy-blue waters, dramatic waterfalls and misty peaks aboard a cruise, while keeping a sharp eye out for dolphins, fur seals and penguins or - for an alternative perspective - visit the underwater observatory.
There's something for everyone here: take a relaxing cruise on beautiful Lake Te Anau; visit the popular glow worm grotto at Te Anau-au Caves; jetboat on the Waiau River; go fishing or hunting, play golf or take to the skies on a scenic flight over Fiordland. If you have the energy, hike the Kepler Track and immerse yourself in its crystal clear lakes, glacial valleys and spectacular forests. Other options for a great day out include the hike to the top of Mount Luxmore, followed by a helicopter flight back to Te Anau, or the scenic drive to Milford Sound, one of the best alpine drives in the world.
Base yourself in beautiful Manapouri, a peaceful backwater where life is as mellow as the lake upon which the township is built, and indulge in quiet pastimes such as fishing and walking. In addition to the plethora of water sports available on Lake Manapouri, you could take a scenic cruise, visit the Manapouri Power Station or drive over Wilmot Pass on one of Fiordland National Park's few roads. Enjoy the amazing 'Sound of Silence' at spectacular Doubtful Sound or embrace the challenges either of the Dusky Track or of Southern Fiordland's Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track.
