Lake Ferry is a fantastic spot, just a tiny town on the edge of Lake Onoke and Cook Strait. Clear days serve up fantastic views of the Kaikouras in the South Island and the view across Onoke to Ocean Beach is the perfect backdrop to a days fishing.
Speaking of fishing, the lake mouth, where it meets the sea provides a perfect white-baiting spot and the kahawai love to run in the just off the shore where the waves break.
Although you can't swim here its a great place to lay on the pebbles and read a good book, throw in a line or just walk along breathing in that fresh sea air.
There's a great pub here - The Lake Ferry Hotel - and it serves the absolute best fish and chips around. A quiet garden bar overlooking the lake provides some stunning views, a great spot to enjoy a cold beverage from the bar. Order a meal (emphasis on the fish and chips) and relax in one of the most beauitful and isolated spots Wairarapa has to offer.
Lake Ferry is only half an hour's drive from Martinborough and is often cycled. About 40mins drive around the coast is Ngawi and Cape Palliser, home to the ninth flashiest lighthouse in the world and a fantastic fur seal colony.
