Food Tours of Marlborough

A behind the scenes food tour visiting local Marlborough food producers in their homes and workplaces where we sample their fresh gourmet produce.

Where ever there is good wine there is sure to be good food. Marlborough NZ is known around the world for its world class Sauvignon Blanc but amongst the vines there are a wealth of boutique food producers producing world class cuisine.

Passionate about what they do, they grow or produce delicious fresh foods. Explore Marlborough’s half and full day tours introduce you to these producers and their wonderful produce.

Good food and wine is one of the real joys of travelling but going behind the scenes into peoples homes and working lives and meeting real local people is the only way to really experience a place.

Basil is just one of the many characters that you will meet. A retired scientist, he and his wife Jenny bought the property 12 years ago with a half planted olive grove and the shell of a half finished house. Since then they have created a home and lifestyle in Marlborough producing Stantons Olive Oil.

Out amongst his olive trees Basil walks us around his range of trees explaining the growing, harvesting and pressing process. Then sitting inside his living room he takes us through a tasting of his olive oils.

It is a diverse property so depending on the time of year we visit we also get to try one of 25 varieties of heritage apples, mandarins or feijoas.

The Explore Marlborough tours spend the morning visiting a range of food producers depending on the season. Cherries in December, plums in January, figs in March, honey and fresh herbs all year round to name just a few.

The gourmet tasting experience continues with lunch at a winery restaurant. If you continue with the full day tour Lisa from Sherrington cheeses hosts the afternoon with a cheese making class followed by a cheese and wine matching exercise. Lisa is a third generation cheese maker learning her skills from her mother and her grandmother. She entertains us with anecdotes of cheese making and tales of the antics of the goats that she milks.

By the end of the day not only are you very full but you will have met some wonderful people, seen some interesting places and tried some world class food.
