Rotorua is renowned for its geothermal activity. Not only does it create a wonderland scenery, but the heat coming from the earth is used for many things. At the Econo Lodge Cleveland Motel we have our own geothermal bore that we use to heat our motel rooms all year round, our swimming pool and we have two hot mineral pools.
As soon as you drive in to Rotorua you will be greeted by the smell of sulphur, and you can see steam coming out of the seethes and cracks in the streets. For a close up look of the geothermal activity at its best Rotorua offers various geothermal parks that you can visit. In these parks you can see a variety of geysers, hot springs, boiling mud pools and hissing craters up close. We have put our top five together for you.
Just 4km from Econo Lodge Cleveland Motel you will find Te Puia, New Zealand’s Maori Arts and Culture Institute. Home to the famous Pohutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere. The geyser erupts about 15 times a day and can shoot up to 30 meters in to the sky. Here you can also experience Maori culture and kiwi birds.
Next door to Te Puia is Whakarewarewa Village. Where visitors are welcomed by the locals into their village and backyards, demonstrating the utilization of the natural geothermal wanders for cooking and bathing and sharing their geothermal existence.
Situated along SH30 (towards Whakatane), Hell’s Gate is an 18 minute drive from Econo Lodge Cleveland Motel. You can try unique mud bathing here and see a mud volcano.
Head along SH5 towards Taupo, and you find Waimangu 25km from the motel. You can see an unreal aqua-blue acid lake here among many other boiling streams and steaming lakes. Here you can also take a boat cruise on a lake with lots of geothermal activity.
Another 2km from Waimangu you find Wai-O-Tapu, in total 27km from the motel. Known for the beautiful champagne pool that sizzles like champagne. This is very colourful geothermal area.
We hope to see you soon in Rotorua. After a day of sightseeing nothing is more relaxing than coming back to a nice warm motel room and have a soak in our mineral pools as you reflect on the days activities.
