Located near Okere Falls on Trout Pool road it’s an easy 30-minute bush walk along a well-maintained track that takes you through stunning New Zealand bush teaming with native birds such as Tui & Kereru.
What really sets the walk apart is the Kaituna River itself – the walk follows the rivers spectacular waterfalls and rapids that are a popular proving ground for white water rafters and kayakers.
Well-positioned viewing areas line the river so you can share in the thrills of whitewater rafting looking on from a dry position as the local rafting companies negotiate the grade 4 river which includes an infamous 7 meter high waterfall. Thousands of adventurers flock to Rotorua every year to raft the Kaituna because it has the highest commercially rafted waterfall in the world. It’s certainly entertaining to watch even if you’re not tempted to take on the challenge yourself.
To access the walk take Okere Falls Road on your left just after the Okere falls store when traveling from Rotorua. Okere Falls Road turns into Trout Pool Road and the large car park on your right where the walk starts is easy to see. Be sure to check out the stairway below the car park that takes you to the first waterfall viewing area on the river – apparently this is also a great place to visit at night where you can see an abundance of glowworms in the hollows along the rivers edge.
