Kawarau Bridge Bungy - The World Home of Bungy

Sarah Bond, a Freelance Travel Writer from Dunedin, New Zealand, gives an account of her experience at the Kawarau Bridge Bungy.

Rooted in bungy history, the Kawarau Bridge Bungy was the World’s First Commercial Bungy site.

Found on Gibbston Highway, between Queenstown and Cromwell stands the modern bungy building. I follow the curving walkway, flanked by photographs, down to the bungy bridge.

Thankfully the historic truss bridge, built in 1880 feels exceptionally solid, especially since I’m about to jump off it! Spectators can either stand on the bridge in support of their bungy jumpers, or sit on the café balcony, enjoying food with a view of the Kawarau River.

Lewis, of the velvet smooth voice, sets me up in a harness and foot cuffs before I have time to think.

He has the kind of voice that would talk people down from ledges, not encourage them to jump off. Clipped in, with my ankles wrapped, I sidle like a geisha to the jump board.

Somehow, in the back of my mind the river below makes it all OK.

“Smile... look up! Try to touch the other bridge,” says Lewis. This is it! I’m in a 43 metre free fall! I bounce on the end of the bungy and I’m suspended above the river in utter disbelief.

I actually did it!

Belly up in the boat like the catch of the day, I caught the condition known as “Perma-Grin”. Walking back up the hill I’m still smiling like an idiot and its official... I’m a Kawarau Bridge Bungy addict.

Feel good factor 10+ and all I can say is, “More please!”
