There’s no denying that New Zealand offers some of the most iconic walks in the world.  The treks are a fantastic way of getting into the thick of New Zealand’s stunning countryside and interacting with its wildlife.  The routes are usually clearly marked and well maintained,  making hiking – or tramping as the Kiwis say – a great option for a day or multi-day adventure.

Once you’ve decided to go for it there are a number of decisions to be made.   Which trek to chose?  Are you fit enough?  Whether or not to take a guide?  They’re personal choices and when it comes to taking a guide, there are positives and negatives.  Yes it does cost a bit more, but here are just a few reasons why we think going with a guide is great:

  1. First and foremost, you won’t get lost!
  2. You won’t have to worry about transfers.
  3. Guides know the best routes to take, and its worth remembering these can change daily depending on the weather.
  4. They know the best lines to take on the routes, which is handy on rocky or slippery ground.
  5. It’s a friendlier option, and a chance to meet travellers from all the corners of the world.
  6. It’s also nice to chat to a local.
  7. Guides know the best lunch spots.
  8. They carry the first aid kit.
  9. Guides usually bring the good biscuits, either freshly made or from the best bakery in town.
  10. The last and best reason is the wealth of knowledge guides have to impart about an area’s history, ecology, wildlife and demography.

However you do it a day out in New Zealand’s countryside is an experience not to be missed.   Get in touch and we will help you pick the route that best suits your interests and fitness levels.  If you would like to take a guide we can discuss the options, and help you decide whether a group guide or private guide would be best for you.  We also have access to a number of private guides for multi-day trips.   Be assured we use the very best companies, ones we know and trust, and ones with the necessary permits from the Department of Conservation.
