Back down south, the rest of the Canterbury region is home to great ski areas. Then Mt Olympus is for you – book a night in Top Hut, which sits in the middle of the field.

If the challenge of skiing Australiasia’s highest mountain is up your alley, Round Hill offers skiing and snowboarding at its best, with breathtaking views of Aoraki Mt Cook and Lake Tekapo.

At Lake Wanaka Cardrona Alpine Resort is ‘everybody’s ski field’ with heaps of terrain at all levels. Treble Cone gets the award for ‘largest and longest ski field’, and is popular with snowboarders.

For traditionalists, Queenstown will always be their spiritual ‘snow mecca’, and it’s not hard to see why. Coronet, Mt Hutt and The Remarkables remain three of the most popular skiing destinations in the world.
