Taranaki is a region in the west of New Zealand’s North Island, with its main centre being New Plymouth. The region offers a huge range of outdoor activities. It’s a place where you can go snowboarding in the morning and surfing the same afternoon!
Mount Taranaki or Mount Egmont, the second highest mountain in the North Island, is the dominant feature of the region. The mountain and its immediate surrounds form Egmont National Park. Taranaki’s landscape and the mountain’s supposed resemblance to Mount Fuji led it to be selected as the location for The Last Samurai, a motion picture set in 19th-century Japan. The movie starred Tom Cruise.
A great region for golf and for cycling, here you find the trails of Lake Mangamahoe and the Forgotten World Cycle Trail.
There are art trails, festivals and award-winning museums and galleries and a thriving café culture.
Here you can also pay a visit to one of the last working lighthouses in New Zealand, the Cape Egmont lighthouse.
After you have enjoyed the outdoor activities this region has to offer, put your feet up and be pampered at the local spas. Click here to see all spas located in Taranaki
