Te Rata Bay Glamping at Lake Tarawera

Glamping has come to Te Rata Bay Lake Tarawera, which is also known as Hot Water Beach. Natural surrounds but with a touch of comfort and luxury.

One thing is for sure I know I am getting older. I now look back fondly on those family camping trips we used to enjoy when our kids were little.  Now at the time I used to think of them as a pure logistical nightmare, we had to pack kids clothes, towels, airbeds, sleeping bags, gas cookers, basically everything minus the kitchen sink. Oh hold on, the kitchen sink was there, it was packed beside the gas cooker. What a shame for my sanity that Te Rata Bay Glamping was not available back then.

David and Karen Walmsley are the first people in New Zealand to be granted a “Glamping” concession on DOC Land. They have worked hard to produce an experience at Te Rata Bay Glamping that reflects a Maori cultural feel alongside an environmentally sound experience. As you enter the site after being whisked across Lake Tarawera by their water taxi you cannot help but feel you have entered Shangri-la.

Just imagine, all you need is your own food, clothes, and toiletries. Everything else you need is there. Spectacular views of Mount Tarawera. The crystal clear waters of Lake Tarawera are there at your front doorstep. Geothermal bathing, fishing, hikes, kayaking and evening glow worm grotto discoveries.
A kitchen tent is set up with a fridge (to keep the bottle of wine cool), gas cooker and BBQ. Plates and cutlery are supplied. Quite frankly David and Karen Walmsley have supplied everything plus the kitchen sink.

There is a bathroom facility with running water and thanks to the solar heating panels you can have a hot shower as well.

I still have nightmares from my family camping trips about waking up in the middle of the night and discovering that my air bed had leaked and I was lying on the cold hard ground. That will never happen at Te Rata Glamping as they have a proper queen bed made up with proper sheets and blankets. There is not one sleeping bag in sight. Best thing is if you want to read a good book you do not have to struggle with touch light oh no not here as they have lighting provided again by the solar panels.

Te Rata Glamping is the perfect solution for those that want to leave the hustle and bustle behind and reconnect with each other and with Papatūānuku (Earth Mother)
