Tongariro Northern Circuit - Mt Tongariro & Mt Ngauruhoe

The Tongariro Northern Circuit passes from alpine fields to forests, tranquil lakes to stark desert-like landscapes of this World Heritage site.

Winding its way over Mt Tongariro and around Mt Ngauruhoe is the Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of the Great Walks of New Zealand.

Located in the dual World Heritage site of the Tongariro National Park, the circuit passes through unique and stunning landforms including volcanic craters and glacial valleys. The track also includes a section of the popular Tongariro Alpine Crossing.

The Tongariro Northern Circuit takes 3-4 days and is a great hike for those wanting a challenge.

The best time to go is from late October to late April, the Great Walks season. Bookings for accommodation at Great Walks huts and campsites are required during this time. There are four huts on the circuit, Mangatepopo, Ketetahi, Oturere and Waihohonu.

Walkers must be self-sufficient, well-prepared and equipped for all conditions, in particular the changeable alpine weather.
