Travelling can be hard on the body – with cramped conditions on flights, buses, or trains, or simply long periods of sitting still. Hiking, jet-boating, bungy jumping, or any additional activities you may undertake while on holiday can also cause a few aches and pains. Read below for our suggestions on how to relax and remedy these.
#1 Treat yourself to a luxurious facial, massage, manicure or pedicure. Make the most of your time available and book in for your preferred treatment at the Silver Fern Day Spa. A large menu range including using natural New Zealand Honey & Thermal Mud will leave you with an experience to remember. There is also five-star accommodation on site at the Silver Fern if you want to extend your relaxation experience overnight.
#2 Discover the healing benefits of the geothermal waters from deep in the earth. Enjoy a soak in an outdoor setting at Waikite Hot Pools, which you will find mid-way between Taupo and Rotorua. Let all your troubles melt away as you overlook natural New Zealand farmland. The geothermal mineral water has been used by the local Maori people for cooking and healing, and will make your skin silky smooth.
#3 Connect with nature and marvel at the height of the Redwood trees in Whakarewarewa Forest. There is a range of walking tracks from beginner, both child and pushchair friendly, right through to day hikes. Clearly laid-out paths, and a visitor centre will help you choose the right walk for you.
#4 Eat out at one of the fantastic restaurants in Rotorua. There are award winning restaurants such as Aorangi Peak and Mac's Steaks, along with award-winning cafes such as Capers and Urbano. Rotorua takeaway store Oppie's has also been voted to have the best Fish & Chips in New Zealand.
#5 Make use of the 12 lakes in Rotorua by taking a walk around them, trout fishing, sailing, or cruising. There are many local companies offering these types of excursions on the main lakes – excluding the Green Lake (Rotokakahi) which remains Tapu or sacred, with no swimming or boating permitted.
There is no way that this article can cover all the amazing ways to relax in Rotorua, but it gives insight into some of the possibilities. Be sure to book more than one night, there is so much to see and do, you will be disappointed if you don’t.
