Top of the North - it's Time 2 Go!

Cape Reinga may be the superstar of this region, but if you linger for longer you'll find the beaches and coastal retreats deserve to be highlights too.

FAR NORTH

Whether you're standing at the tip of the North Island watching the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean collide in a maelstrom of churning waves and spume; hunting for the mystical Maori Underworld at the roots of an 800-year old pohutukawa tree; tobogganing giant sand dunes; following in the footsteps of gumdiggers; or cruising down ninety miles of beach, one thing's for sure - there's plenty of choice in the Far North region.

DOUBTLESS BAY

Beautiful beaches abound in Doubtless Bay, and beyond the pristine sands and sparkling waters you can explore the gum-digging region of Lake Ohia, visit Taipa's 'two potters', and play golf or taste wine at the magnificent Carrington Estate.  Alternatively, you could learn about the history of kauri logging in Mangonui, also home to one of New Zealand's best fish and chip shops.

WHANGAROA

This rocky, volcanic harbour offers spectacular scenery with chiselled cliffs, exquisitely sculpted by wind and time, thrusting heavenwards from a turquoise-sea.  Native grasses, kowhai and pohutukawa trees cling precariously from rocky ledges in natural hanging gardens above coves fringed with honey-coloured sands, providing a superb backdrop for sailing, kayaking, diving and fishing.  Game-fishing is a popular sport here, and you can enjoy a round of golf at Kauri Cliffs, dive the wreck of the Rainbow Warrior at Matauri Bay or explore the region's numerous heritage sites.
