Wanaka for Families - 10 Winter Must Dos

Wanaka provides a gamut of activities for families with cute wee kids, through to families with nagging teens. Here are 10 of our Wanaka family favourites.

Winter in Wanaka is as much about the activities off the mountains as it is snow on the mountains. Whether you are looking for some after ski activities or something for a rest day, Wanaka provides a full gamut of activities suitable for families with the smallest of wee kids, through to the most nagging of teenagers.

To help you catch just some of Wanaka’s best, here are 10 family friendly activities to ensure your holiday is full of gigs and great family times:

  1. One of Wanaka’s most popular activities for kids and adult alike has to be Puzzling World. As the name suggests, Puzzling World creates a puzzling paradise bound by the walls of the six-foot high ‘Great Maze’ and iconic leaning buildings. Attractions include several illusion rooms, mind boggling puzzles in the café and a hologram hall.

  2. The Jazz Apples Freeride Park is the latest addition promoting snow exploration at Treble Cone. Although this Park has been around for a couple of years, it is bigger and better now! Managed by our Snow Sports team, the jumps have had alot of care and attention put into them, safety and fun are at the forfront of our minds.

  3. Everyone loves Mexican food right? Wanaka has plenty of family friendly dining of which our favourite has to be Amigos Mexican Grill. The food is fresh, quick and filling. But be warned, this one is no secret, so get in early to avoid disappointment. If you’re not so keen on Mexican, other great family eats include Francesca's (Italian), Lone Star (steak house), Bombay Palace (Indian), Red Star (burgers) and Sasanoki Japanese Kitchen (Japanese).

  4. There is no better way to unite a family than with embarrassment and laughter. If you haven’t already, try crossing over to snowboarding for the day, with a family private lesson at Treble Cone. The beginner lift area at Treble Cone is 100% free and offers a secluded area for the family to try their hand at something new.

  5. A great rest day or weather day activity for the family is the Clip ‘N Climb wall at Basecamp Rock Climbing Wall. Clip ‘N Climb is the safest way to rock climb with auto-belay (an automated safety mechanism) and plenty of colourful hand and feet holds to help you smoothly scale up the wall.

  6. For a family friendly après drink, we recommend heading to Gin & Raspberry. Gin & Raspberry will mix Mum and Dad a delicious cocktail whilst entertaining the teens with two pool tables in the back room. A few of the other bars offering space for the kids to move are Woody’s Bar in Post Office Lane and Creek Side Bar next to the Wanaka Library.

  7. If you’re not a ski family but find yourself in Wanaka over winter, we recommend checking out what all the mountain fuss is about with a scenic chairlift ride at Treble Cone. The Scenic Chairlift ride will drop you at the top of the Home Basin where you are free to walk around taking family photos with Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps as a back drop. Once you’ve had your fill head back down the chairlift and enjoy a hot drink on us in the café.

  8. Ready for a mid-holiday holiday? Wanaka has several babysitting services that could help grant you a romantic night for two. We recommend heading straight for the mood lighting and delicious wine list of The Landing. The second floor location creates a beautiful vantage over the lake, especially when the moon is full. For babysitting services start your search with Lake Wanaka Babysitting and Babysitting Wanaka.

  9. But why stop the relaxation at dinner? Wanaka has some of the finest day spas in New Zealand, all of which will have you back up and ready to hit the slopes with the kids. For some of the most therapeutic hands in town, try Massage in Wanaka, Aspect Day Spa and the new Element Day Spa at Edgewater.

  10. Treble Cone’s TC Cat is a New Zealand icon ready to take your kids skiing or snowboarding for a half or full day lesson. With early drop offs available from 9am, kids can spend the day with Treble Cone, including lunch, giving parents the opportunity to explore the vast mountain or sip wine on the sun deck.

We look forward to seeing you and the family in Wanaka this winter. Don’t forget to pack the ski gloves and googles.
