In line with all other DOC Great Walks, the Whanganui Journey now requires individualised bookings for both campsites and huts and they must be made before you start your trip.
And even though paddlers under the age of 18 can stay in both huts and campsites for free, they still have to be booked in as individuals by name.
The big plus is that you can now book hut beds (subject to availability), something that you could not do in the past, but this comes at a price - hut beds are more than double the price of campsites in generally.
It's possible to make your own bookings through this link https://booking.doc.govt.nz/Menu.aspx?sg=WJY, but at peak times it may require a juggling act to ensure you can get canoes at the same time you want campsite or hut bookings and vice versa.
Blazing Paddles Canoe Adventures has developed its own online booking system that allows you to easily check their availabilities and DOC's availabilities from the same web site. You have the choice then of making your own DOC bookings onine and then booking your canoes with Blazing Paddles, or your can leave it all to Blazing Paddles who will make your DOC bookings as well.
The Blazing Paddles online system also allows you to book any extra equipment you might need.
Please note: At this time the Blazing Paddles online booking system can only be used for parties where the youngest person is 12 or older. If you have younger children, you need to phone Blazing Paddles Canoe Adventures on 0800 252 946 to ensure your family has the best possible experience.
