Based in Wellington's rugged Akatarawa Ranges, 10km north of Upper Hutt City, the Karapoti Classic is New Zealand’s premier mountain bike event. Established in 1986, it is renowned worldwide as the Southern Hemisphere’s longest running mountain bike event. Held on February 18 in 2017, this old-school adventure ride combines a huge but achievable challenge with superb scenery and an awesome social scene. Past winners have included world champions and Commonwealth Games gold medalists, but with options ranging from the feature 50km Classic to the 20km Challenge and the Kids' 5km Classic, Karapoti has something for everyone and is renowned as the one race on every mountain bikers wish list.
