Blessed by warm climate, reliable rainfall and productive soils, Whangarei grows a bountiful array of quality produce, from exotic subtropical fruits to traditional vegetables.

It is this abundant and high quality local produce that led to the establishment in 1998 of the Whangarei Growers Market, inspired by the traditional village markets of the United Kingdom and Europe and now held every Saturday morning in downtown Whangarei. The market was the first of its kind in New Zealand and is one of the largest.

Every Saturday morning, shoppers flock to the market where they're entertained by buskers, enjoy excellent coffee and take the opportunity to socialise with growers and meet up with friends and family. It has become a ‘true heart of the community’ event for Whangarei families.

You will find fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, cheese, preserves and honey, nuts and olive oil, flowers and plants on sale - all produced locally with the growers themselves on hand with rural knowledge and friendly banter.  You will find all the in-season staples there as well as more exotic and novel fare.

The region's generous rainfall has fostered a sturdy community.  You won't find that a spot of weather keeps anyone at home or under cover.  The market is open every Saturday all year round, rain, hail or shine.  Growers are flat out harvesting and packing their produce the day before and then come to town in the wee small hours of Saturday morning, where they park their trucks, utes, vans and trailers and set up their colourful stalls right in front of them.  The market officially opens for the community at 6:00am and finishes at 10:00am.  See you there.
