Three hours south of Auckland lies Rotorua, a city home to geothermal wonders, the Redwood Forest, dormant volcano Mount Tarawera and fascinating Māori culture. Journey to Lake Taupō, a lake the size of Singapore that was created as the result of a volcanic eruption 2,000 years ago. Venture to the Huka Falls, where the Waikato – New Zealand’s longest river – tumbles north between two banks that are only 100m apart. The result is a crashing, roaring tumble of water; best seen up close with a thrilling jet boat ride. For more sedate water activities, take a cruise to visit Mine Bay and see the huge, intricate Māori rock carvings. For a different perspective, Sky dive over Lake Taupō, a popular activity for a bird’s eye view of the lake and nearby volcanoes.

Day 6: Lake Taupō – Ruapehu

Studded with volcanoes, golden plains, thermal springs and turquoise blue lakes, the Ruapehu region is geographically spectacular. Today the majority of the region is made up of Tongariro World Heritage Park, New Zealand’s first National Park. The hiking in the Ruapehu region is some of the best in the country - take a guided walk up to Mount Ruapehu’s Crater Lake and soak up the huge, surreal views.

Journey back to Auckland for a day of urban adventures. Experience the iconic Harbour Bridge on foot with the Bridge Climb and enjoy spectacular, 360 degree views from the top. Or, venture up the Sky Tower and get the adrenaline pumping with a walk around the outside ring of the tower – 192 metres above the ground. There’s also the SkyJump, New Zealand’s highest jump, where guests leap from the Sky Tower to fall towards the ground at about 85kph. Later on, relax and unwind with a stroll around the waterfront, enjoying Auckland’s food scene at one of the lively Viaduct restaurants.
