In March 2017, the world’s most thrilling mountain biking festival returned to the geothermal wonderland of Rotorua for the third year running.
Around 800 mostly international riders and more than 10,000 spectators will converge in the steamy mountain biking mecca for this five-day festival of fast and furious fun, spliced with pumping musical events and rousing, authentic Māori cultural performances.
Most of the events take place at the Gravity Park, which is transformed into a two-wheeled party zone as crowds cheer on their favourite riders shredding their way down crazy ‘dirt gold’ courses cut by some of the world’s best track builders.
The Air Downhill event run on Skyline’s gnarly Mr Black course provides plenty of heart-in-the-mouth moments with over 30 jumpable features, while the traditional Downhill race sees skills rule over style on a super-technical course that includes off-camber action, rock garden trickery and some monster air to finish.
Side-by-side racing enthusiasts will be sated by the super-speedy and flowy, pedal-free Pump Track event, and one humdinger of a Dual Speed & Style course, described by Crankworx champ Martin Soderstrom as the best he’d ever ridden.
Crankworx’s crowning glory, Slopestyle, closes out the festival in explosive fashion, as eight invitation-only riders flip, whip, spin and speed their way down a course of gargantuan obstacles that need to be seen to be believed.
