Clendon House was built in the 1860s by James Reddy Clendon, one of NZ's earliest traders and shipowners. Following Clendon’s death in 1872, his wife Jane (who was of Hokianga Maori descent) was left with huge debts and eight children. Fortunately, Jane and her family managed to keep home, family and possessions together.
Lived in by the family for over 100 years, the house contains the family collection with many interesting items. The house and contents were purchased from the family by the Historic Places Trust in 1972.
