42 Traverse

The 42 Traverse is one of the most popular adventure rides in the North Island, following an old logging road through the Tongariro Forest.

4 – 7 hours

The 42 Traverse is a challenging ride that follows an old logging road through the Tongariro Forest from Kapoors Road (off State Highway 47) through to the township of Owhango. Experienced riders will enjoy the often rutted and slippery 4WD track, with some fun downhills making the long climbs worthwhile. Intermediate riders will also enjoy this ride as it is not technical but does require a good level of fitness. There are several river crossings en route that may become impassable after heavy rain or later winter snowmelt so check the conditions before you embark on your ride. Please ensure you are prepared for a ride in a remote area with poor access. Those with no mountain biking experience are best not to attempt this ride. Take plenty of food, water, appropriate clothing, a map, bike tools, a puncture repair kit and a first aid kit.
