It’s the best kept secret of the Southern Lakes in New Zealand: Spring is a superb time to head to the snow! Not only does the season offer warmer temperatures and longer days, you can also enjoy uncrowded slopes and possibly ski or board in a t-shirt!
1. The mountain is open for longer
Daylight lingers for longer...that means the mountain should be open for longer too right? Right! From the 7th of September onwards Cardrona is open a whole hour longer, calling last chair at 5pm. On the last weekend of September the clocks go forward an hour which means even longer days...how about skiing or snowboarding all day with heaps of daylight left to get down the mountain and enjoy some lakefront après afterwards? Sound good?
2. Getting a sweet tan
Sun’s out, guns out!! When the sun is shining all day long for days on end, you’ll be stoked to get that neck-up bronzing going! When it gets really warm you might even find yourself shedding layers and skiing or snowboarding in a t-shirt.
3. Everything is cheaper!
From flights to accommodation to lift passes, spring attracts all the sales and deals! With cheap flights throughout September and October, there’s no excuse to not get on a plane for that memorable mountain holiday. Throughout Wanaka and Queenstown, accommodation switches to the “off-peak” season and you can even snag yourself a spring deal on one of Cardrona’s on-mountain apartments!
4. Fewer people on the mountain
Late season means shorter lift queues and more sliding for you! Sleep in and still get into one of the upper car parks, be first in line for your morning coffee at Juice and Java at the Cardrona base, and enjoy uncrowded slopes all day!
5. Open for all of October School Holidays!
Cardrona has the longest ski season in the South Island and is open for the entire October School Holidays. It means you can get the most out of spring with your whole family in tow! The kids will love the fact that they don't need to pack on the layers or risk cold fingers from the usual winter storms. WIth over a month to use your Spring Pass along with shorter queues, larger views and longer days....Spring is the best time to visit Cardrona!
