6 Day Trains Fiords & Glaciers

Spoil yourself with a trip to beautiful fiords, stunning glaciers and the best scenic rail routes of New Zealand's South Island.

Day 1:

Christchurch - Dunedin
Travel south across the Canterbury Plains through seaside Timaru, and historic Oamaru to Dunedin, the "Edinburgh of the South". Arrive early afternoon. Today's coach includes limited commentary.

Stay 1 Night in Dunedin.

Preferred accommodation: Kingsgate Hotel (bronze/standard) and Scenic Hotel Southern Cross (gold/superior).

Day 2:

Dunedin - Taieri Gorge - Queenstown
This morning is at your leisure for optional sightseeing. Board the Taieri Gorge train to Pukerangi where you join your coach to Queenstown arriving in the evening.

Stay 3 nights in Queenstown.

Preferred accommodation: Copthorne Lakefront (bronze/standard) and Heritage Hotel (gold/superior).

Day 3:

Queenstown - Milford Sound - Queenstown
Pass through the pristine beech forests and the Homer Tunnel to view the majesty of Mitre Peak and Bowen Falls, while enjoying lunch aboard a cruise to the Sound. Depart Milford Sound back to Te Anau, then head north, following the dramatic southern shores of Lake Wakatipu to reach Queenstown.

Day 4:

At Queenstown
Today is free for you to enjoy this fabulous alpine resort - we have included the Skyline Gondola in your tour. There are many optional activities, from thrilling jet boat rides to leisurely lake cruises, 4WD safaris and bungy jumping.

Day 5:

Queenstown - Glaciers
Travel north through the dense rainforests broken by the rugged coastal vistas towards the glaciers. A shuttle will take you to view these massive frozen rivers of ice.

Stay 1 Night in Franz Josef or Fox Glacier townships.

Preferred accommodation: Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier (bronze/standard) and Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier (gold/superior).

Day 6:

Glaciers - Christchurch
Travel north past Hokitika, to Greymouth. Board the renowned TranzAlpine train and travel through the Otira Tunnel, over Arthur's Pass and across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch, arriving early evening.
