Art Galleries

With over a dozen galleries in the Taupo area, visitors are well positioned to view a variety of art.  Featuring a range of artistic mediums from local, national and international artists, the art lover will find plenty of diversity as well.

A popular favourite among locals and visitors alike is the Taupo Museum and Ora Garden of Wellbeing. 'Sharing Taupo Stories with the World' is the focus of Taupo’s vibrant district museum which contains an array of exhibits with everything from Maori treasures, a Kiwiana caravan and rotating art galleries. With children’s activities available and just $3-5 entry, this option is a great choice for families and the budget conscious.

For a comprehensive experience, a short drive out of town is the rural-situated Lava Glass Café and Gallery. With an onsite café, relaxed atmosphere and bucolic surrounds, Lava Glass provides a holistic artistic experience.  View glass artist, Lynden Over, demonstrate the glass blowing process in the Glass Blowing Studio.  Visit the Lava Glass Sculpture Garden, which meanders through acres of pristine grounds decorated with over 500 glass sculptures.


The warmer month are buzzing in Taupo, with regular concerts and gigs to engage and entertain. The Taupo Summer Concert is a particularly popular event, attracting performers and visitors alike to the area. The Wanderlust Festival is another big draw, taking place annually and bringing together the world's renowned yoga teachers, musical acts, speakers, chefs and performers in a celebration of healthy and holistic living.

Summer is the season for events in Taupo, but the darker months aren’t to be ignored. The annual Taupo Winter Festival takes place each year during the New Zealand July School Holidays. Festival events are centred around the Taupo CBD feature an array of exhibitions and activities celebrating arts and culture.


If you’re looking to take home a little piece of Taupo for yourself, there’s ample opportunity to make a purchase and support local artists. Purple Patch Taupo is a non-profit shop that sells infant to adult gifts on behalf of local artisans and handcrafters. Profits are donated to local charities. L'Art Gallery and Sculpture Garden is surrounded by an awesome mosaic garden oasis and is filled with a diverse range of art, all created by New Zealand artists. Resident clay and mosaic artist Judi Brennan sells her own individual art exclusively from L'Arte.  “Art in the Park” is a weekly exhibition where local Taupo artists and craftspeople display and sell their own creations. The exhibition operates on Saturdays between 10.00am and 3.00pm (weather dependant) at the lake front.

Public Art

Thanks to the formation of the Taupo Sculpture Trust, the region is blessed with a number of exquisite public sculptures and works of art. These artistic works reflect the landscape and spiritual background of the surrounding lake, plateaus and mountains.  Many are located along the Lake Terrace walk with Lake Taupo as a backdrop.
