There is something quietly satisfying about escaping to the slopes during the working week, when your friends are toiling away in their concrete towers. Even better….you get to avoid the lift queues and crowded slopes!
Closest to Christchurch
Generally New Zealand’s ski areas are at their busiest during the weekend and we’re no different at Porters. Porters ski area is the closest ski area to Christchurch International Airport, with a drive time of only one hour, and is tucked away at the eastern end of the Craigieburn Range. Most of the road to Porters is via a State Highway (SH 73) and there is only 7km of mountain road of the state highway, so access is easy to the mountain.
Come during the mid-week and avoid the hustle and bustle. Zoom into the lift queue – which quite frankly is unlikely to be much of a queue - grab the Easy Rider chairlift, a quick trip on the top T-bars and be at the top of the mountain at 1980 metres. The panoramic views of Lake Coleridge and the Southern Alps are quite simply breath-taking. There are plenty of expert and advanced trails to test your turns on the way down.
Best Learners’ Area in Canterbury
Great Learners' Area
Porters has gained quite a reputation for arguably the best learners’ area in Canterbury. The shallow incline, easy transitional area from magic carpet to chairlift, and safety fences are all designed to make learning a fun experience. Plus, if you come mid-week there are likely to be fewer others around!
Friendliness is definitely a well-known trait at Porters especially at the 120 seat café where the hot chocolates are legendary.
So leave the corporate grind to your less lucky friends and grab a break at Porters for fun mid-week ski holiday on the slopes at Porters.
