Discover History in Macetown

A trip to Macetown is the perfect mix of adventure and history.

Macetown is a regular backcountry haunt for hikers, mountain bikers, horse parties, and 4WD vehicles.  The abandoned gold settlement is the lost twin of thriving Arrowtown and while the buildings are long gone you can easily wile away a few hours picnicking and visiting the old mines, batteries, and ruins further up the valley.

Access is via the Big Hill walking track or along a 4WD road along the river valley from Arrowtown, located 20 minutes from Queenstown. The track is 15km each way so if you are walking or biking allow plenty of time or camp overnight. There are several quite deep river crossings so if you’re self-driving make sure you have an appropriate vehicle for the conditions.  Alternatively, sit back and enjoy a guided tour from one of the 4WD tour companies – they know the rivers like the back of their hand and have some great stories to tell.
