Eastbourne is Wellington's seaside village a short trip from the city, but within easy access via the ferry which travels across from the city's Queens Wharf regularly. Choosing to travel across in the middle of the day gives you a chance to enjoy a simple cruise around the harbour visiting Matiu Island along the way.
What to Do
Once in Eastbourne, there are galleries with high-quality artwork, cafes with sea views and for the adventurous a walk through virgin native forest with ancient trees with trunks 2 meters in diameter plus wonderful harbour views. From a visitor's review - "Just 30 minutes from Wellington, yet the picturesque setting on the water's edge felt like we were far far away. We loved how we could walk one way and have the choice of two delicious restaurants and then walk the other and have a choice of a number of gorgeous bush walks plus local cafes and knick knack shops to peruse among."
Days Bay is Wellington's premium beach, north facing and sheltered, the beach is safe, the water warm in summer and beach facilities are all within 200m. Williams Park, located opposite the wharf has a pond and playground for the children, and some easy walks around the bush next to the park. There are three cafes, two restaurants and a gallery for browsing. Just lazing on the sandy beach or a walk through the forest are options.
Try a walk to the village, and maybe a stroll along the Marine Parade promenade, which extends up to 4km along the beachfront with uninterrupted views. Maybe you will see a penguin, seal or Orca, maybe not, but you will definitely be absorbed in the birdlife. Kawau, Torea and maybe a flock of acrobatic Tara.
Stroll past Days Bay Homestay, Windy Point and along Rona Bay beach to the Eastbourne wharf before ascending to the village.
At the village you can visit the pub to enjoy some time with the locals, visit three more galleries, two cafe's, get ice cream from two popular suppliers or a quick takeaway from one of three. The village provides shopping for the locals.
Stay a while
As a recent visitor stated on Days Bay Homestay's Tripadvisor review page "We were within easy walking distance to the ferry dock, galleries and restaurants. ....... It was great fun to eat (and watch rugby) with the locals, have a few draft beers and stroll along the water back to our place. The ferry to Wellington became part of the adventure, too."
Outstanding views from a whole floor waterfront suite. Handy to the city. Plus - Kayaks, Spa, or Bikes for your use. Close to Wellington's best unspoilt bush with ancient Rata trees. See our website review links for feedback.
