Skiers and snowboarders can now enjoy even more time on snow and more space on the slopes in the Southern Alps. With a continuing emphasis on improvement of facilities and terrain, five upgrades have recently been undertaken at Cardrona Alpine Resort.
1. Longer Ski Season
Cardrona’s winter season has been extended by two weeks and now runs from 13th June to 11th of October 2015, the longest ski season in the South Island. This is exciting news for families who will be able to enjoy spring skiing through to the end of October School Holidays.
2. More Skiable Terrain
Cardrona is already well known for its wide open groomed runs, and with extensive trail development in the summer months in 2015, even more on-piste skiable terrain has been created. Cardrona’s trail network now includes a new intermediate trail providing 10 extra hectares of groomed terrain. Several main trails have been widened to give even more space to beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders.
3. New Beginner Conveyor
For the beginners, a new learner conveyor has been constructed which runs parallel to the existing conveyor to help decrease lift queues. There’s nothing like keeping the kids moving, to keep them stoked on learning to slide on the snow!
4. More Terrain Park Features
If you follow world class winter sports you may be aware that Cardrona is a training ground for many Olympians and top snow athletes. Keeping true to its Olympic reputation, Cardrona continues to improve its freestyle facilities. This includes earthworks in the 22ft Olympic Halfpipe to make the transition from each wall longer and to make the pipe easier to maintain.
The smallest of the four terrain parks, ‘Lil Bucks’ has been moved to give beginner freestylers more space and a larger variety of features. The move will also increase the available space for beginners down McDougall’s green run.
5. New ‘Snow Sat’ System
Four new snowcat groomers, equipped with cutting edge ‘Snow Sat’ technology are enabling improved slope management and snow depth measurement. Cardrona is the only resort in the Southern Hemisphere with this technology. It not only means increased accuracy in communicating snow depth, but also better utilisation of the snow on the slopes = better snow for you!
