Explore Rotorua in Autumn

Autumn is a great time to visit Rotorua, with countless geothermal attractions and some of the best walking and biking trails on the planet!

The 15km Tarawera Trail begins just south of The Buried Village and ends at Lake Tarawera’s Hot Water Beach where you can reward yourself with a relaxing soak in a lake edge hot pool. Pre-booked camping is available at Hot Water Beach and the Lake Tarawera Water Taxi service is available to transport you to or from the beach to Lake Tarawera Landing.

If you prefer to go by bike, the 47km Te Ara Ahi Cycle Trail takes you around the spectacular geothermal areas of Rotorua, past bubbling mud pools and steaming vents. There are three sections to choose from. You can conquer the trail in one huge session or in two easier days. It is the perfect way to experience the fresh autumn air.

Only five minutes’ drive from the Rotorua CBD, you will find the magnificent Redwoods of the Whakarewarewa Forest. The forest is the perfect playground for walkers, hikers, horse riders and mountain bikers. Grab a map from the Redwood Centre on long mile road and get out and explore!

Enjoy the peaceful boardwalk of the Lake Okareka Walkway, a 2.5km track that winds around the edge of one of Rotorua’s smaller lakes, Lake Okareka. Take in picturesque views of bush laden hills, native forest and farmland as you stroll through the wetlands. Observe a variety of bird life including Canadian Geese, White-faced Herons, Paradise Ducks and more from the birdwatching hide.
