Fernhill Loop Track - Ben Lomond, Queenstown

The ever-changing environments of this walk make it an exciting short walk, easily accessible from the Queenstown CBD.

This track is great for it's ever changing environments that you walk through -  native beech forest, alpine streams, tussock top-lands,.. several times over.

I'd recommend starting from Queenstown,  accessing via the Tiki Trail from the Skyline Gondola base car park or utilising the Skyline road (walking) from Lomond Crescent. Make your way to Mid-Way Clearing and follow the signposts to the Fernhill Loop Track (which starts here).

Certainly go prepared with water, food and extra warm clothes. Temperature changes can be quick and harsh and snow is possible at any time of year.

The hike up from Mid-Way Clearing is rewarded when you break out above the tree line into the tussock lands and are greeted by wild goats and sensational views rolling down the valley and out over  Lake Wakatipu toward the Remarkables.

Having lived in Queenstown for 8 years these are possibly the best views I've encountered yet. The walk down the Fernhill side is equally rewarding with great views, and a steep but enjoyable walk through pines back to civilization.

The steepish drop back down to Fernhill is the reason why I'd recommend beginning the trail at Mid-Way Clearing on the Gondola side of the valley.  Enjoy this fantastic short walk.
