New Zealand is one of the greatest fishing countries in the world. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll find excellent fishing here. From glacial streams and wild rivers, to lakes and deep-sea fishing there are many ways to hook a fish.
When it comes to freshwater fishing, almost every season offers you a chance to fish in New Zealand, giving you a unique experience each time. Spring is a wonderful time to target trout; they’re usually feeding a lot after winter. You may also have some luck catching sea trout, as they enter coastal rivers around this time. Summer brings warm days and free-rising trout will be the majority throughout the country. Summer also will give you plenty of chances to catch lake trout; they’re busy feeding on all the smaller fish around then- try trolling to effectively catch lake trout! January, February and March also offer the best opportunities to catch large salmon in the rivers of the South Island, mainly on the East Coast as they enter from the Pacific Ocean to begin spawning. Autumn will be a great time to fish as well; cooling weather means more active fish. Winter doesn’t offer near as much as other seasons, usually due to the weather.
Location isn’t usually an issue either. Whether you’re on the north or south island, inland or near the coast you’ll always be close by to some wonderful fishing!
Sea and saltwater fishing is phenomenal in many coastal areas. The type of fish you can catch varies depending on location. If you’re in the north you’re likely to catch snapper, kingfish, marlin or tarakihi. If you’re fishing in the south you’ll likely catch blue cod, trumpeter, and grouper.
You have many possibilities when it comes to how you’d like to fish, including surfcasting, rock fishing and fishing from a chartered boat. Some of the most popular areas for sea fishing include the Bay of Islands, Auckland, Doubtless Bay, the Bay of Plenty, Marlborough Sounds, and Southland. You can also find game fishing bases in Whangaroa, Russell, Tutukaka, and Tauranga. The best time of year for sea fishing is summer and autumn.
