Guided Overnight Hikes in the South Island

There is something very special about being utterly “away from it all”, no roads, no urban noise, just you and New Zealand's magnificent wilderness.

One of the best things you can do in New Zealand is go for a day walk or hike, and multi-day hikes are the ultimate challenge. The hikes we have included here, the Hollyford and Humpridge in Fiordland, the private access Kaikoura Wilderness Walk and the Queen Charlotte Track at the top of the South Island, ensure that you are well looked after, with little to worry about other than a reasonable level of fitness and an appreciation of magnificent scenery. Accommodation ranges from luxury (at Shearwater Lodge and on the Queen Charlotte Track) to very comfortable (on the Hollyford and Humpridge Tracks). Meals are catered for and are a great opportunity to share stories with fellow “trampers” - while listening for the night calls of kiwi. These are not the most famous of New Zealand's great walking trails, but we encourage you to take the "road less travelled" to give you a unique New Zealand experience, among a small group of keen walkers, enjoying varied and outstanding scenery.

The Hollyford Track: A superbly organised 2 night/3 day 37 km trek along the Hollyford Valley (near Milford Sound) to the sea at the magnificent and remote Martin’s Bay. The rainforest is dense, the guiding is superb and the private accommodation very comfortable. After a night at Martin’s Bay Lodge you helicopter out via Milford Sound back to “civilisation”. Transport options are available from either Te Anau or Queenstown.

The Hump Ridge Track: This is a more challenging 3 night/3 day loop walk that takes hikers along the south coast of New Zealand, up to the sub-alpine zone of the Hump Ridge, and past historic sites in the heart of native forest. The two backcountry lodges are in superb locations, one mountain-top and one coastal. Good fitness essential, although helicopter access assists with some of the steeper sections of this track. Access 1 1/2 hours drive from either Te Anau or Invercargill.

Kaikoura Wilderness Walk: Kaikoura Wilderness Walks take you on an exclusive guided walk through the privately owned Puhi Peaks Nature Reserve. Over 2 or 3 days guests enjoy the 'ultimate wilderness experience'. Nicky, and her team of expert, local guides hike with you through this outstanding alpine environment and host you at day’s end in the luxurious Shearwater Lodge. Access 2 hours drive from either Blenheim or Christchurch.

Queen Charlotte Track: This is an easier track than the others, winding between beautiful coastal bays in the Marlborough Sounds at the top of the South Island. You start at Ships Cove (a favourite of Captain Cook’s on all three of his voyages to New Zealand) and finish three days later at Portage. Marlborough Sounds Wilderness Guides run a combination of guided and unguided hiking, biking and kayaking options along the track. The accommodation enroute consists of boutique bed and breakfasts, small inns and lodges. Access from Picton or Blenheim
