Lake Tarawera is one of 18 lakes in the Rotorua region, only a 15 minute drive from Rotorua. The pristine lake is set amidst beautiful natural New Zealand scenery and lies underneath the majestic Mount Tarawera.

The Tarawera Trail
The Tarawera Trail is set to become another one of New Zealand's great walks. The 15 km walk reveals endless amounts of breathtaking scenery, historic sites, crystal clear streams and native New Zealand bush filled with Pohutakawa and groves of giant Mamaku Ferns. The walk finishes at a unique thermal beach (Hot Water Beach) where you can camp out for a night or catch a ferry back the same day.
Hot Water Beach
A little less known is the lakes unique geothermal activity, which heats a secluded beach on the edge of the lake. Once only accessible by boat, Hot Water beach can now be accessed by the newly opened Tarawera Trail. Thermal springs gently rise through the lake bed, warming the water and the beach. It is a perfect location for a relaxing swim in the lake or dig your own thermal hot pool on the beach.
