Pick up a campervan hire in NZ for an unforgettable holiday adventure

The summer holidays in New Zealand will soon be here. Hit the road in a campervan hire to experience this beautiful country at its best.

Get up close and personal with God’s Own Country. The Land of the Long White Cloud, God’s Own Country, Middle Earth... New Zealand has been given many evocative nicknames over the years, and it’s not hard to see why. The people are friendly, the towns welcoming, but it’s the scenery and natural beauty which is far and away the country’s highlight. Mountains, beaches, lakes, forests - the landscapes are the main character in any travel story, and the best way to get yourself involved in the tale is with a New Zealand campervan hire.

Tour New Zealand for the holidays

Term 4 starts soon, which means the summer school holidays in NZ are drawing close. Not only are the kids out of classes, but the season brings a holiday mood to the entire country: Christmas and New Years mean statutory public holidays, workers take a few days or weeks of vacation and life in general slows down to enjoy the sunshine. What better time to hit the road and get amongst it?

It’s easy to pick up a campervan hire NZ from one of the main hubs: Auckland or Wellington in the North Island and Christchurch or Queenstown in the South. Whether you are planning to see just one region, one island or as much of the country as you can, a campervan hire provides the freedom and flexibility of setting your own schedule and itinerary, while retaining some degree of creature comforts.

There are vehicles to fit any style to which you have become accustomed, from luxurious 8-berths with shower, toilet and kitchen to small and nimble sleepervans which provide just a place to sleep. Take the whole family for a school holiday extravaganza, or escape with a travelling partner for an epic and unforgettable journey.

NZ road trip destinations

All campervanned up and nowhere to go? New Zealand is your oyster, and it’s a very tasty one. Here are a few suggestions of fantastic destinations for a NZ school holiday road trip - mix and match to make your own itinerary!

Northland

Rising above Auckland, this wide strip of land is full of beaches, estuaries, ice-cream shops and other summery delights to please anyone - especially the kids. Highlights include the Bay of Islands, long and wild 90-mile beach, the scenic Cape Reinga and the legendary fish and chip shop at Mangonui.

Coromandel Peninsula

Beach and native bush are the stars here. Similar to Northland but more compact, it offers endless opportunity for hiking and watersports. Don't miss Cathedral Cove (as seen in the Chronicles of Narnia), the natural hot springs at Hot Water Beach, stunning New Chums Beach and the hippie, arty town of Coromandel.

Taupo and Hawkes Bay

These two adjacent regions are certainly worth the drive. Lake Taupo is the setting for adventures in sailing, swimming, fishing and more, while Hawke’s Bay is renowned for wonderful wineries and the lovely art deco architecture of Napier. Take a drive past the majestic mountains of Tongariro National Park - you might just spot Mt Doom.

Nelson and Marlborough

It’s impossible to list the wonders of the northern South Island in a few sentences. From the golden sands of the Abel Tasman National Park to the jagged inlets of the Marlborough Sounds, it’s a place of diverse and amazing landscapes. The famous Marlborough wine region produces some great sauvignon blancs too - just make sure you have parked up for the night before partaking!

West Coast

This one’s for intrepid NZ campervan tourers who like a little wilderness. The west coast of the South Island is a region of moody beaches, mountains meeting the sea and plenty of space to think. Highlights include the two glaciers, Fox and Franz Josef, the fascinating rock formations at Punakaiki and driving over one of the scenic mountain passes.

Queenstown, Milford and surrounds

The entire southwestern section of the South Island is a feast for the eyes - lakes, mountains, picturesque towns perched between the lakes and mountains, jaw dropping fjords, plains filled with wildflowers, native bush and more. No South Island holiday would be complete without a visit to Queenstown, Adventure Capital of the World. Bungy jumping, jet boats, sky diving, luge rides - it is a mecca for adrenaline junkies.
