A southern journey

Take a journey through the heart of the South Island and you’ll be mesmerized by the azure colours and pristine beauty... that's before Queenstown.

Azure beauty through alpine lakes

The best way to take this most scenic of routes is to land at Christchurch International Airport and collect your rental car from Touchdown Rentals, before driving south.

While it may only be six hours drive time from Christchurch to Queenstown, don’t rush it.  Instead power up your camera and catch the opportunities to take some scenic pictures.  You’ll likely get the most engagement ever when you post to Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat!

Highlights enroute Christchurch and Queenstown

Pull into the Mt Cook Alpine Salmon Farm show located on the shore of Lake Pukaki (in the Lake Pukaki Visitors’ Centre building) for flavoursome salmon straight from the snow-fed waters of the region.

You can see Aoraki Mount Cook from the main road however a diversion to the village of Mount Cook gives you an up-close-and-personal look at New Zealand’s highest mountain (3 724 metres).  While there have a look through the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, a tribute to New Zealand’s most famous mountaineer, humanitarian, explorer and ambassador.

Relax in the hot pools at Tekapo Alpine Springs in one of the three pools that are kept warm at temperatures of 36-40 degrees Celsius.

Pop into the Wooing Tree winery in Cromwell for wine-tasting or to select your favourite Pinot Noir to enjoy later.

Through the autumn months of March, April and May the colours around Queenstown and her neighbour, Arrowtown, are truly breath-taking. As the season changes the tree leaves take on hues of bright orange, scintillating reds, and vibrant yellows.  This is definitely a time to take more pictures. Surrounded by this beauty you can enjoy sightseeing and activities from your base at Queenstown Park Boutique Hotel.
