Rabbit Island is a 20 Minute drive from Nelson city and a perfect way to spend part of the day.
The beachfront itself is perfect for picnics and sunbathers. The water is shallow and gets deeper slowly as you go out making it perfect for families. Several miles of soft sand just waiting for sandcatles and mermaids to be built.
There are tables and chairs with sunshades dotted about the recreational reserve and many of them are hidden in there own little corners making it great for a quiet romantic picnic or area to keep an eye on the family while they play.
There are BBQ's there for your use but you need to bring your own equipment and food with you as there is nothing to buy on the island itself.
As you drive over the bridge and enter Rabbit Island there is another turn to your left taking you onto Rough Island. This is the equestrian side of the island with arenas for dressage, show jumping and a cross country course as well as a spot for western and pleasure riding.
Rabbit Island has a maze of Mountain Biking tracks just waiting to be explored. These are mainly entered at the front of the beach to the left hand side. There is parking and information boards up so please read before you head out on you ride.
The tracks are mostly easy with a few spots to challenge you. Many people walk these tracks as it is just lovely through the bush so take care on those fast corners. It is possible to ride a lap of the whole Island.
No matter what you are heading to the Island for there really is something for everyone.
Although not on a bus route it is possible to hire bikes for the city to ride there and make a day of it with your own picnic. You may like to contact us and enquire about charter transport options also.
