If you visit Wellington you can’t miss a trip to the world famous Te Papa Tongarewa – Museum of New Zealand. Te Papa is the most visited museum in Oceania, having attracted nearly twelve million visitors since opening in 1998. Located right on Wellington’s beautiful waterfront, you will need to allow yourself at good couple of hours to make your way around all the exhibitions showcasing New Zealand's diverse art and visual culture. Te Papa also hosts top-rating international exhibitions frequently so make sure you check out if there is something touring while your there!

Our Space is one of the two main permanent exhibitions featuring an innovative and interactive exploration of New Zealand identity.  This area of the museum reflects New Zealanders' attitudes to their country, one another, their history, their past and their future. Our Space also features two rides: The High Ride – a wild aerial tour, and The Deep Ride – a journey 2,000metres below the ocean's surface aboard a submarine simulator.

The other main exhibition at Te Papa is Blood, Earth, Fire - Wha-ngai, Whenua, Ahi Ka – The Transformation of Aotearoa New Zealand. It is full of interactivity and information, taking you on a journey through the changing landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand.

There is always something exciting going on at Te Papa. It frequently hosts top-rating international exhibitions, hold events, and floor talks. Once it even defrosted the largest known specimen of colossal squid!

If you want to add more depth and understanding to your visit through Te Papa, then jump on a guided tour with a knowledgeable guide. All tours can be tailored for special interests and multi-lingual guides are available on request. Tours departs hourly in summer (Nov-Mar) and twice daily through winter (10am & 2pm).

On your way out, don’t forget to check out the shops in the museum. In the Te Papa Store you can explore a wide range of the quality Maori arts, New Zealand books, applied art, and jewellery. Without a doubt you will find precious and iconic gifts and probably something special for yourself as well. Te Papa even has a kid’s store full of fun and quirky, distinctively New Zealand, gifts even adults will find amusement in.
