Try Something New in Taupo

Looking to try something new on your trip to Taupo? Here are our suggestions.

A holiday is the perfect time to try new experiences. Here are some of our recommendations for those of you who are looking to do something a little bit different during your next visit to Taupo.

Prawn Fishing

Prawns, they make terrible pets, are pretty ugly looking and will even eat their own young, but they taste oh so great! Just minutes north of Taupo is the Huka Prawn Park, a whole outdoor park dedicated to the production of New Zealand fresh water prawns, and family fun. The park is home to family favourites like golfing, nature walks and playgrounds. Prawn fishing is of course the highlight of Huka Prawn Park, as you can eat, or take home, as many prawns as you can catch! Entrance to the park includes a guided tour of the hatchery, all the activities and as many prawns as you can catch (fishing equipment included).

Drive a Race Car

Getting behind the wheel of a race car might sound like an intimidating proposal but it’s guaranteed to be one of the most memorable days of your life. Your adrenalin will be rushing as you speed around one of New Zealand’s premier race tracks, the Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park, aboard a V8 or Formula Challenge race car. On arrival you will receive some brief but comprehensive pointers on driving on the track before heading out with an instructor for a familiarisation lap, from there it’s over to you to see if you can set a lap time that will get you onto the leader board. Be warned though the need for speed can be addictive and your morning commute may never feel the same!

Scenic Flying

Do you usually do your sight-seeing by foot, car or bus? Why not take to the sky and get a completely new perspective on the stunning Central North Island landscape. A scenic flight over Taupo can take in some of the most breath-taking natural features such as the Orakei Korako geothermal area, the central plateau mountains or the mighty Huka Falls. Doing adventures like this by float plane means you will get the additional thrill of taking off and landing on the majestic Lake Taupo.
