Our kayak trips at Whale Island are always a great adventure. We load the kayaks on to the boat at the Whakatane Wharf, just along from the iSite and usually depart around 8am or later in winter. On the trip out we often encounter shoals of feeding kahawai and dolphins. Upon arriving at the island, we drop anchor in one of the more sheltered bays and set off on a two hour kayak adventure, exploring a coastline of towering cliffs, dramatic rock features and sea caves. Encounters with New Zealand fur seals are the norm, but there are also little blue penguns and a range of sea birds around the island.
I love this tour for the simple fact that no two trips are ever quite the same and the clients always enjoy the sense of freedom and adventure. On returning to the boat we serve up a morning tea of home baking, home grown fruit and a range of beverages, while a swim from the boat is always and option or just an opportunity to soak up the sun and wide coastal vistas, beofre the return boat trip to Whakatane. Numbers limited betwen 6-8. Novices expected - suitable for most ages !
