A spectacular location, exceptional service and a warm welcome have combined to earn Pacific View Bed and Breakfast in Whangamata the prestigious national AA Spirit of Hospitality Award in Home Hosting for 2011. Having opened their bed and breakfast just 18 months ago, owners Kathryn Officer and Peter Brignall are "over the moon" with the award and believe their success is down to the personal experience they give each of their guests and their attention to detail.
"It's all down to Kathryn, she is an absolute perfectionist" Mr Brignall said.
Ms Officer said, "I think the little things can make a big difference so we give complimentary port, chocolates, refreshments. I provide robes, beach towels, toiletries. And the feedback we get in our guest book and online is that it's the attention to detail, the little extras, that make a difference"
The couple met four years ago in Auckland where Ms Officer worked as a personal assistant and Mr Brignall was on holiday from England. We came down to Whangamata and Peter absolutely loved it. "I had been made redundant twice and so I decided to sell my house and we bought this place," Ms Officer recalled.
Although enjoying the new lifestyle, her desire to be busy prompted the move into hospitality. "We have two guest rooms, one is a Super King with an en suite and the other is a Queen room. "It's enough for me because I can manage it myself, although Peter is my bathroom cleaner, he does a great job".
The couple have thoroughly enjoyed meeting people from both New Zealand and across the world with guests coming mainly from Britain, the United States, Australia and Germany. "We've had some lovely people. When they get here we'll sit down and have a cup of tea with them before they get settled. We usually invite them for a drink before they head out to dinner. If they need a lift I will take them downtown and pick them up, Mt Brignall said. It's whatever the guest wants really".
"I do provide dinner if it is ordered in advance and then they eat with us which is a lovely social thing for us as well" Ms Officer added.
The award is based on feedback given by guests through the AA website which is particularly pleasing for the couple.....
