Winter in the Central Plateau

Nestled in the middle of New Zealand's North Island lies Turangi, one of the closest townships to the Tongariro National Park. Read on for more details...

Winter is a wonderful time to visit the central North Island of New Zealand.  You not only have the opportunity to ski on an active volcano, situated in the Tongariro National Park, but also to fly fish on the world famous Tongariro River.  The township of Turangi is ideally placed to cater for your visit to this unique region of the country.

White water rafting is also on offer, along with the legendary Tongariro Alpine Crossing, which sports some of the most spectacular scenery in the area.  There are picturesque mountain bike trails that follow the Tongariro River to the local National Trout Centre.  This is a must see, with a trout viewing area and a museum to browse through.

There are relaxing hot thermal pools located in the next township of Tokaanu.  Make sure you glance down into the stream as you cross the small bridge to the pools, as there are often large trout nestling in the warm waters.

No visit to the region would be complete without partaking of the natural beauty of Mount Ruapehu, with its walking tracks, informative Department of Conservation centre, and for those that enjoy skiing, there are three fields to choose from.  The Whakapapa skifield has a cafe up top with breath taking views down into the valley where you can watch skiiers on the slopes.

On your way back down why not stop at the Chateau in the Whakapapa village at the base of the mountain? High tea is served here and you can sit in their spacious lounge with its large picture window that takes in the conical Mount Ngauruhoe, otherwise known as Mount Doom to Lord of the Rings fans.

It is late autumn here now and the leaves in their full autumn tones now litter the ground. Winter is upon us.  Soon the skiiers will arrive and the flyfishermen too.

Turangi, the all year capital of this area, is waiting for this special time to showcase all there is to offer in this wonderful part of the world.
