Mt Alfred in Glenorchy rewards hikers with alpine, river, lake and valley views.
Mt Alfred, at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, is a popular day hike starting from a carpark off the Glenorchy-Routeburn Road, 20 minutes from Glenorchy. Look for an unmarked car park on the right-hand side of the road.
The 4-6 hour return trip begins from the western side in the Dart River valley and the track zigzags uphill through native beech forest for most of the way.
After this, a marked route can be followed further along the bushline; if you're keen to venture beyond this to the exposed upper section of the track you'll need permission from Earnslaw Station (the working farm there). It's tougher going up there through rocks and tussock but it has the best views of the Southern Alps, Dart River and Valley and the lake,
The track is not recommended for young children and you should have a good level of fitness to tackle the hike.
