The Cardrona Valley is one of the key attractions in the area, particularly in winter due to to its popular ski fields. It’s also a go to driving route throughout the year because of its striking views. Be sure to check out the famous Cardrona Hotel and much-loved Cardrona Hall.
If you’d like to visit a lake or two, bump Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea to the top of your list. These glacier-carved lakes can be enjoyed from the water, by hiking the shoreline tracks, or you might choose to take in the views from an impromptu picnic at the water’s edge.
Another scenic spot is the River Clutha, found at Lake Wanaka’s south-eastern tip. Walk or bike the track that runs alongside the South Island’s largest river. With constant views of the Clutha’s emerald-green water, and the odd trout to be seen, it’s a peaceful getaway.
