The rural township of Pirongia sits at the foot of Mount Pirongia, and makes a good base for explorations into the native forest.
The quaint township of Pirongia is home to lovely cafes, a local museum and the famous Pirongia Clydesdale horses.
It makes an excellent jumping-off point for hikes into Pirongia Forest Park. Walks range from one hour to overnight, allowing you to explore extinct volcanoes, mysterious caves and dramatic river gorges.
The Pirongia Boxing Day Races are a highlight of the town's calendar, held on 26 December each year. Pirongia also has monthly country markets, with locally grown produce and interesting arts and crafts.
With its range of B&B and farmstay accommodation, Pirongia offers a comfortable and authentic rural New Zealand experience.
